Ritual Oil Lamp

(žōng) ژونٛگ

20th Century Origin: Kashmir Material: Terracotta This rare and fascinating artifact is a traditional Kashmiri multi-wick terracotta ritual oil lamp, commonly known in regional material culture as a 'Chongti' or 'Choongth'. Designed with remarkable geometric precision, the circular lamp features eleven distinct, teardrop-shaped oil reservoirs (diyas) arranged symmetrically along its outer rim, radiating outward from a central dome-shaped handle. The profile view highlights its unique architectural design, showing a tapered pedestal base and small, hanging clay teardrop pendants suspended from wire loops beneath each wick station. These delicate pendants add both a rhythmic visual texture and an element of movement to the rustic piece. Deep soot deposits and charring within the individual bowls testify to its extensive historical use in evening rituals, domestic illumination, or festive occasions. Representing a beautiful merger of utilitarian pottery and spiritual symbolism, this piece highlights the earthy, grounded side of historical Kashmiri craftsmanship.
