Water Vessel

19th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Terracotta The unusual flattened form and opposed suspension lugs distinguish this water vessel from conventional Kashmiri storage pots. Rather than being conceived for stationary household use, its construction suggests mobility. The vessel could be secured with a cord and carried, functioning as a terracotta counterpart to the more familiar skin mashk. The asymmetry and subtle variations in the fired surface preserve the hand of the potter and the practical nature of the object. Private collection: Trām and Beyond
