Shawls

Kashmiri shawls, are among the most globally recognized outputs of the region. Celebrated as one of the most refined textile traditions in the world, they blend technical mastery with timeless aesthetic sensibility. Hand-spun and hand-woven from exceptionally soft and lightweight pashmina or shahtoosh wool, often with labour intensive and intricate embroidery (Sozni) or woven patterns (kaani), they would take months or even years to complete. Historically patronized by royalty and later prized in European markets, Kashmiri shawls became symbols of luxury and cultural exchange.

1826 CE Origin: Kashmir Material: Pashmina Wool Design: Kani Hand-Woven boteh This spectacular early 19th-century Kashmiri shawl is a premier example of traditional 'Kani' loom weaving, capturing the pinnacle of the valley's historic textile vocabulary. As shown in the full view, the piece is designed with a rare balanced composition, featuring a fine ivory-cream central field (*matan*) bordered by dense, multi-tiered ornamental panels (*pallu*). Close-up images reveal the extraordinary detail of the borders, which showcase repeating elongated Boteh (paisley) motifs filled with incredibly dense floral scrolling work. These large Boteh elements are rendered in rich madder red, indigo blue, and mustard gold, framed by multi-colored patchwork-style fringe blocks at the short ends. Conversely, the open ivory field seen in Shawl1C.jpg is punctuated by delicate, spaced floral sprigs and corner Boteh accents that balance the heavy weight of the borders.
