Tea Caddy

Early 20th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Papier-mâché, hand-painted and lacquered A finely preserved example of twentieth-century Kashmiri papier-mâché demonstrating the son e kām (gold work) tradition. The metal-lined interior and fitted lid indicate its intended use as a tea caddy, while its elegant floral decoration reflects the continued adaptation of traditional naqqashi techniques for refined domestic objects during the twentieth century. Combining practicality with refined decoration, such containers were produced for domestic use as well as for the growing luxury handicraft market of the twentieth century.
