Late 19th – early 20th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Papier-mâché, hand-painted and lacquered Design: Chinar The extensive use of genuine gold paint, combined with the dense Chinar leaf decoration and lustrous lacquer finish, places this lamp among the more accomplished examples of late Kashmiri papier-mâché. It represents the continued evolution of one of the Valley's most celebrated artistic traditions during the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. The decoration is executed using the traditional naqashi technique, with real gold paint applied in multiple layers beneath a transparent lacquer coating that imparts exceptional depth and luminosity. The Chinar (Platanus orientalis), revered as the emblematic tree of Kashmir, became one of the most enduring motifs in Kashmiri decorative arts, symbolising the Valley's gardens and changing seasons.
