Tumbler

Late 19th–early 20th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Copper with tin plating and black enamel This copper drinking tumbler is decorated with dense floral arabesque covering its entire surface. The principal field consists of continuously interlacing stems, leaves and small stylised flowers, creating a richly textured surface in which the individual motifs merge into a unified vegetal pattern. The simple cylindrical form contrasts with the richness of the surface decoration, reflecting an important characteristic of Kashmiri metalwork in which ordinary domestic vessels could become objects of considerable decorative refinement.
