Serving Tray

(maj-ma) مجمہ

Late 19th century Origin: Kashmir Provenance: Europe Material: Copper An exceptionally elaborate Kashmiri copper tray, distinguished by the extraordinary density and refinement of its engraved decoration. At the centre is a prominent rosette-like floral medallion, from which the surrounding vegetation appears to radiate. The floral vocabulary is characteristic of the ornamental tradition associated with Kashmir. Flowering stems, leaves, buds and stylised blossoms intertwine continuously across the surface, creating the impression of a richly woven textile translated into metal. The design is not merely applied as isolated motifs. Instead, the foliage forms a dense, interconnected ground in which positive and negative spaces are carefully balanced. The central field is enclosed within a particularly elaborate openwork border, composed of scrolling foliage and arabesque forms worked in delicate pierced metal. It’s almost lace-like quality contrasts with the densely engraved central field and demonstrates the remarkable control of the craftsman over the copper sheet. The tray illustrates the close relationship between Kashmiri metalwork and textile ornament. The engraver has treated the copper almost as a textile surface, filling it with the same rhythmic vegetation, floral abundance and intricate detailing that characterise Kashmir's celebrated shawl tradition. The result is an object in which function, ornament and craftsmanship converge, transforming a serving tray into a highly sophisticated work of decorative art. Private collection - Traam and Beyond
