Mid-19th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Copper with tin plating and black enamel Design: Shawl-tarah This finely engraved Kashmiri ewer is distinguished by its bulbous body, flaring neck, and elaborate zoomorphic spout and handle terminals. The form combines Persian-inspired ewer shapes with distinctly Kashmiri decorative vocabulary. The entire surface is covered with dense floral arabesques, paisley motifs, and geometric bands executed in the shawl-tarah style. Such vessels were used for serving water or ceremonial. The intricate hand engraving reflects the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Kashmiri craftsmen, whose workshops produced both utilitarian and decorative metalware for local patrons and export markets.
