Tumbler

Late 19th–early 20th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Copper with tin plating This Kashmiri copper tumbler is a finely decorated example of the region's traditional daily use copperware. The copperworking centre of Shehr-e-Khaas in Srinagar was already well established by the 19th century, producing vessels including cups and glasses that formed part of the recognized repertoire of Kashmiri copperware. The construction and mature engraved decoration are consistent with this period when Kashmiri copperware was extensively produced and traded. The exterior is divided into three principal decorative registers, separated by narrow horizontal bands. Repeating floral arabesques, scrolling foliage and cusped compartments cover much of the surface, leaving only narrow bands of undecorated copper between the ornamental zones.
