19th century Origin: Kashmir Provenance: Europe Material: Copper, and traces of interior gilding This exceptional Kashmiri copper teapot reflects the extraordinary level of craftsmanship developed for the European export market in the late nineteenth century. Its bulbous body, elongated spout and elaborate finial are entirely enveloped in densely worked engraving. The interior was originally gilded in gold, a luxurious treatment that has largely worn away through time and use. Traces of the gilding remain visible, offering a glimpse of the object's original richness. The extraordinary density of ornament, extending even across the handle, spout and lid, demonstrates how Kashmiri metalworkers adapted their craft to meet the tastes of European collectors, transforming a functional vessel into an object of display.
