Wall Niches

Inspired by the recessed wall niches once found in traditional Kashmiri homes, this intervention reimagines a familiar architectural element as a contemporary display. The frames are crafted from salvaged "Kaanas", the carved timber cornices that originally crowned the wooden ceilings of the house before its reconstruction. Rather than allowing these fragments of the past to disappear, they have been carefully preserved, their weathered paint, worn edges and aged timber retained as quiet witnesses to another life. By giving the discarded cornices a new purpose, the niches become more than a place of display. They are an act of remembrance through architecture, allowing material, memory and craftsmanship to endure together.
