Willow Wicker
Egg Basket
(Thul-e Zaen) ٹھُل زٮ۪ن
20th century CE Origin: Kashmir Material: Wicker willow weaving A traditional Kashmiri egg basket, particularly notable for the fineness of its wicker and the deliberate visual variation within the weave. The thin weave is noticeably more delicate than that seen in many later examples, allowing the willow strands to form dense, finely textured bands around the basket. Alternating sections of tight weaving and open criss-cross work create a rhythmic pattern across the cylindrical body. The design is further accentuated by natural variations in the colour of the willow weave. Private collection: Trām and Beyond
