Late 19th – early 20th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Nickle Silver Anklets such as this formed part of the traditional jewellery worn by Kashmiri women on ceremonial occasions and during important family celebrations. This pair demonstrates the sculptural character of traditional Kashmiri jewellery. Their weight, rhythmic form and sculptural terminals gave movement and presence to the wearer, while the use of nickel silver made elaborate jewellery accessible without sacrificing craftsmanship. The hollow construction is itself a testament to the ingenuity of local metalworkers. By reducing weight without diminishing volume, they created ornaments that balanced comfort with visual richness. Today, these anklets stand not only as objects of adornment but also as enduring examples of Kashmir's mastery of ornamental metalwork, where everyday materials were transformed into objects of remarkable elegance.
