(sat-ma-nan) ست مَنَن

Late 19th Century Origin: Kashmir Material: Gilded Silver and tilla-thread cord This striking piece of heritage ornamentation is a traditional Kashmiri bridal necklace known as a 'Satmanan'. Rooted deeply in the regional jewelry vocabulary, the name literally translates to a composition of "seven segments" or "seven units," represented here by seven prominent, hollow metallic beads or amulets strung in perfect alignment. The central bead is designed as the largest focal point, flanked symmetrically on either side by three graduated spherical beads. Each of the seven segments is intricately adorned with delicate filigree and granular texturing, creating a rich surface that catches the light beautifully. The gilded metallic section is anchored by thick, twisted metallic thread wraps that transition into a long, adjustable braided tilla cord finished with a decorative tassel. Historically worn by Kashmiri women during weddings and major cultural festivities, the Satmanan is not merely an ornament but an emblem of marital auspiciousness and heritage craftsmanship.
