Forehead Ornament

19th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Gilded metal, emeralds, garnets, rubies and pearls A richly ornamented Kashmiri forehead jewel, locally known as a Tyok or tikk, designed to be suspended at the centre of the forehead. Particularly notable is the object's construction. The interior is filled with laash, a traditional supporting compound that provides body and stability to the thin metal framework while supporting the closely packed stone settings. The ornament follows the floral vocabulary characteristic of Kashmiri jewellery, where the colours of flowers, leaves and fruits were often evoked through coloured precious and semi-precious stones.
