Hookah Bowl

(chi-llim) چِلِم

Late 19th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Zahar Mohar (Geen serpentine / steatite-type stone), Copper This Chillim is a carved serpentine stone bowl used as the tobacco receptacle of a traditional Kashmiri hookah called a Jajeer. Positioned at the top of the water pipe, it held burning tobacco above the stem through which smoke was drawn. The present example is fashioned from green serpentine, locally called Zahar Mohar, a material traditionally believed to possess protective properties and to detect or neutralize poison. The bowl's robust form and heat-resistant stone construction made it particularly suitable for repeated use, while also reflecting the enduring importance of hookah culture in Kashmiri social life.
