Carpet with Central Medallion
(qālīn) قالین
Early 20th Century Origin: Kashmir Material: Silk This masterpiece of Kashmiri textile art is a finely hand-knotted silk carpet featuring a highly complex central medallion layout, strongly influenced by classical Persian design schools. Clusters of delicate ivory, rose-pink, and pale turquoise blossoms cover the field in a mesmerizingly detailed all-over floral arrangement. At the exact center rests a magnificent, multi-layered starburst medallion (Toranj) rendered in a striking ivory hue. This central element is mirrored elegantly at the four corner spandrels (Lachak), beautifully balancing the entire visual structure. The main field is enclosed by a wide, contrasting ivory border adorned with a continuous vine-scroll carrying alternating large palmettes and rosettes in terracotta and soft blue tones. Flanked by multi-layered minor guard bands, this carpet showcases the extreme knotting density and curvilinear precision that defines premier-grade Kashmiri silk weaving.
