Vishnu (or Avalokiteshvara) on Garuda

18th–19th century CE Origin: Kashmir Material: Gilt brass alloy with inlay of coral, turquoise, and white jade A gilt-brass devotional plaque depicting a seated Vishnu upon Garuda, framed by scrolling filigree and inlaid with coral, turquoise, and white jade. The materials trace the vast trans-Himalayan trade networks of the period: Mediterranean coral carried through Central Asia into Tibet, turquoise mined in Ladakh and Western Tibet, and white jade imported from Khotan uniting distant landscapes through devotion and Himalayan craftsmanship. The plaque exemplifies late Nepalese–Himalayan filigree craftsmanship, where Hindu and Buddhist iconographies merged with Silk Route luxury materials. Private collection: Trām and Beyond
