19th–20th century Origin: Kashmir Material: Brass This brass samovar belongs to the quieter domestic tradition of samovar-making associated largely with Kashmiri Pandit households. The restrained brass surface contrasts with the elaborate engraved copper samovars of Kashmir, but the vessel's sculptural details remain expressive. Its form is particularly characteristic. The cylindrical body rises from a latticed lower ash chamber, designed as an integral part of the vessel rather than a separate element. Above it, the water chamber surrounds the central fire container, allowing the heat of the charcoal to slowly bring the water to a boil. More than a vessel for boiling water, the samovar occupied a central place in Kashmiri domestic life. Tea was prepared around it and served to family and guests, making the samovar closely associated with hospitality, conversation and ceremony. Private collection — Trām and Beyond
